Raid on Bungeling Bay is a 2D shoot ’em up that is viewed from ‘overhead’. It looks like very SimCity- esque for the time. The player controls a helicopter launched from an aircraft carrier to bomb six factories scattered across islands on a small planet occupied by the Bungeling Empire (note: frequent villains in Broderbund games), while fending off escalating counterattacks by gun turrets, fighter jets, guided missiles, and a battleship. There is also a hidden island for the player to reload on. Failure means that the Bungeling Empire develops a war machine to take over the planet Earth. Players have to attack its infrastructure while defending the aircraft carrier which served as home base. So time is of the essence here – the longer you play and not progress the game the harder it gets.
I can’t think of another game like it for the C64 , and I must say it is very addictive.
The game was released in 1984 by Broderbund software, who released other awesome games for the Commodore 64 such as Lode runner, Choplifter, and of course David’s Midnight Magic. It was written by Will Wright who also wrote SimCity – you can see the similarities in the style of the two games.
For a trip down memory lane, have a look a the gameplay:
